The Best Used Jeep SUVs: From Wrangler to Wagoneer
The Jeep Wrangler ranks right up there with apple pie and football when it comes to distinctly American things. Our love affair with the classic, short-wheelbase, boxy, go-anywhere Jeep 4×4 has been going steady for nearly 80 years. Ever since the first returning G.I.s from World War II and their families bought surplus Army Jeeps to drive to the beach and their favorite fishing holes, Americans have had a special place in their hearts for these tough little vehicles.
Of course, today, we’ve come a long, long way from the bare-bones military surplus Jeeps of the past, where your loyalty was rewarded with a rock-hard, buckboard ride and the constant aroma of gasoline. The modern Jeep lineup includes some fantastic modern interpretations of the original in the form of the Wrangler, which remains true to its roots. But that’s just the beginning. We’ve got Jeeps of all sizes and shapes ranging from affordable, well-optioned used Wranglers all the way up to fancy schmancy Grand Wagoneers—and a bunch of stuff in between.
But that’s enough of an introduction—-let’s get into the list of our favorite used Jeeps!
Used Jeep Wrangler JL (2017-Present)
The Jeep Wrangler, a model that put Jeep on the map, got its name in 1986, with the YJ model replacing the old CJ. Its square headlights are its most identifiable feature. The Wrangler retains its iconic look and remains a top SUV for off-roading.
The current Jeep Wrangler JL, introduced in 2017, offers a more comfortable ride with a coil spring suspension. It’s safer and more comfortable than the older CJ and YJ models. Despite these upgrades, the Wrangler stays true to its off-road roots with solid axles, powerful engines, and options for automatic and manual transmissions, as well as two- and four-door versions. There’s even a hybrid model, the Jeep Wrangler 4Xe, and a pickup version, the Jeep Gladiator.
A standout aspect of buying a used Jeep Wrangler is its value. Since the design hasn’t changed much since 2017, you can buy a used model at a lower price but still enjoy the style and capabilities of a new one—without the hefty monthly payment.

Used Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2 2011-2021 and WL 2021-Present)
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most popular, best-selling Jeep model in the U.S. Though the Wrangler is the iconic representation of the brand, the Grand Cherokee was an instant hit when it debuted in 1993 (ZJ). It started with the High Output 4.0L inline-six and soon offered a 5.9L V8.
The fourth-generation (WK2) Grand Cherokee, sold from 2011 to 2022, is a great choice for used buyers. This sleek model features the Quadra-Trac 4WD system and five powerful engines, from the 295-horsepower 3.6L Pentastar V6 to the insane 707-horsepower supercharged 6.2L Hemi V8 in the Trackhawk.
The current fifth-gen (WL) Grand Cherokee launched in 2021. Beautiful, low-mileage used models that look just like the new ones in showrooms are available for a fraction of the price. The newest model mainly improves tech and in-car entertainment, with 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch high-resolution touchscreen displays.

Used Jeep Cherokee (KL 2014-Present)
The Jeep Cherokee is arguably almost as legendary as the Wrangler. Armed with the same tried and true 4.0-liter inline-six beloved by Jeep owners for years, the OG Cherokee was a serious off-road weapon that was just as comfortable in town as it was on the trail. First-gen Jeep Cherokees are roaming around today with 2-300,000 miles on them. These things just won’t die.Â
So when it came to redesign one of the favorite trail-rated small SUVs of all time, Jeep knew they needed to be careful and deliberate. We think the Gen 5 Cherokee nailed it. It’s ultra-modern exterior look might make some of the Jeep purists a little cranky, but we welcome the improved aerodynamics that add up to quieter highway driving and a couple of extra MPG.
A used Cherokee is a good buy. Because they haven’t changed the look since 2014, they are an excellent value proposition. Even a well used Jeep Cherokee will have you riding in style since it looks a lot like a brand-new one with a little wash and wax. They are still as tough as nails and have the unbeatable Jeep 4WD technology you can’t get anywhere else.Â

Used Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
The Jeep Grand Cherokee occupied the top of the food chain for decades until they decided to bring back the Wagoneer in 2021. Okay, there was the Jeep Commander, but that was only around for four years. So when the new Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer models debuted, it was a big deal for Jeep fans.
If you’re interested in a large, luxury SUV with three-row seating and the Grand Cherokee isn’t quite big enough for you, Major World’s got you! A low-mileage Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer is exactly what you’re looking for.Â
The earlier used Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers offered the 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter HEMI V8s, respectively. The more recent ones, including the used Jeep Wagoneers on our lot at the time we’re writing this, all come with Jeep’s potent new Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six engine, which also appears in the new Ram pickups.Â
Jeep Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: What’s the Difference?
Both Jeep Wagoneer models share the same platform and three-row seating, but the Grand Wagoneer comes fully loaded with luxury features like leather seats, second-row captain’s chairs, and expansive touchscreens. The regular Wagoneer offers the same capability and cargo space at a more affordable price. Many opt for a used Wagoneer for its value, while the Grand Wagoneer stands out as a top-tier luxury SUV.

Used Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade
The Jeep Compass and Renegade are a bit like two sides of the same coin. These are the small SUVs to pick if you want that Jeep flavor, but you need something affordable, good on gas and easy to whip around in and park in the city.Â
A used Jeep Compass will be the more car-like of the two and it’s a little roomier inside with some extra power. Think of it as a micro-Jeep Cherokee. A used Renegade, on the other hand, has a bit more of that off-pavement, boonie-crashing style. It’s more like a little bitty Wrangler (sort of). Both have Jeep’s capable 4WD technology on board and will get you up a snowy driveway or through the sand dunes, though (make sure you have a beach permit and know how to drive on sand first —- air those tires down!)Â
Used Jeep Compass vs. Jeep Renegade
Used Jeep Compass
- 200 hp turbocharged 2.0 liter inline 4
- 24/32 MPG
- 18.5 cu ft cargo room
Used Jeep Renegade
- 177 hp turbocharged 1.3 liter inline 4
- 23/29 MPG
