Yes, You Can Get a Great SUV for Under $25,000

With a $25K or under SUV, you’re looking at a monthly payment well under 500 bucks — and that’s assuming you don’t have a trade-in vehicle. Much easier to manage, right?

• 2018-2022 Chevrolet Equinox: We’ve sung the praises of this tough little truck before. We think it’s the best small crossover that most people are sleeping on. It’s an outstanding value for the money, highly rated by automotive experts, very safe in an accident and it sips gas. What’s not to love?

• 2016-2018 Honda CR-V: We like these because you can still get the trusty, proven naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 2.4 liter inline 4 up until the 2019 model year. CR-Vs have sportier handling than most small crossovers.

• 2014-2019 Toyota Highlander: It’s a Camry on steroids. Enough said. You get AWD, ride height, and legendary Toyota quality. This is also the last generation to get a V6 engine (OK, you can get some early 2020 fifth-generation Highlanders with a V6 if you look hard enough, but most of ‘em have the 4-cylinder now.)

 

• 2016-2022 Ford Explorer: The 2016 fifth-generation Ford Explorer has sexy Range Rover looks, and we love it for that alone. Overall, though, the Explorers in this year’s range are solid and safe family SUVs with an amazing range of engines, from thrifty 4-bangers to the fire-breathing, 400 horsepower twin-turbo 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 straight out of the F-150. 

 

• 2018-2022 Chevrolet Traverse: The Chevy Traverse is a solid option if you need a midsized SUV — but you want as much room as possible. The Traverse has a best-in-class cargo and passenger room with third-row seating that an adult can fit into. All that – plus a powerful 3.6 liter V6 borrowed from the Cadillac division. 

 

Fantastic Full-Size SUVs under $25K

Sometimes nothing less than the XXL will do. Go big or go home, right? If a full-size SUV is your heart’s desire — Major World has you covered. The Sequoia is the big daddy Toyota—based on the full-size Tundra truck platform, it has plenty of interior room and the 3UR-FE 5.7 liter V8 that puts out a whopping 381 horsepower and 401 ft-lbs of torque. It also happens to be one of the most reliable V8 engines ever produced. 

 

• 2014-2018 Ford Expedition: Still a crowd favorite, the hulking Expedition and its luxury stablemate, the Lincoln Navigator are built on the sturdy bones of the Ford F-150 and share similar capabilities in terms of towing and off-roading (what the kids call “overlanding” now)
