Top 5 Safest Used Cars in an Accident
Crash safety. Sure, it’s not as sexy a topic for conversation as horsepower, torque, and quarter-mile times, but there isn’t one of us who doesn’t care about the safety of what we drive.
Major World is looking out for you and your family. Check out our list of the top 5 safest used cars in an accident.
Safest Compact SUV: Honda CR-V
Honda is doing pretty well on our list and we’re not surprised. This engineering-focused automaker has been laser-focused on safety for a couple of decades now. The CR-V is a safe compact SUV that’s chock full of charisma and hard not to love.
The IIHS gave the CR-V its highest “Top Safety Pick +” rating and the NHTSA has given them 5 stars overall going back to 2012. It exhibits the same tossable, fun-to-drive character that makes a Honda great to own too.
The CR-V makes an excellent vehicle to commute to the city in since it sips gas and has available AWD for weather. We also see a lot of our customers buy them as a first car for a son or daughter, which is another instance when safety is extra important, naturally.

Other compact SUVs with good crash safety ratings include
- Toyota RAV4
- Mazda CX-30
- Hyundai Kona
Safest Mid-Sized SUV: Ford Explorer
The safest mid-sized used SUV on our list is none other than the perennial best-selling Ford Explorer. It’s ranked a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It’s fair to say that the Explorer is a sure bet to keep you and the people you love most safe in an accident. It’s also held a 5-star overall rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the last 10 YEARS.
There’s almost nothing the Ford Explorer doesn’t do extremely well and it also comes with the widest selection of engine options in its class.

Other mid-sized SUVs with good crash safety ratings include:
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Toyota Highlander
- Mazda CX-9
Safest Large SUV: Audi Q7
Most of us feel pretty safe in a large SUV no matter who makes it, but the truth is all large SUVs are not created equal. When it comes to the safest full-size SUV, that title goes to the opulent Audi Q7.
It also happens to be one of the most luxurious used SUVs on our list. If you can’t get comfortable in an Audi Q7, you probably can’t get comfortable anywhere. This German rocketship is also startlingly nimble in the curves, especially for such a large vehicle.
The Audi Q7 earned high praise as one of the IIHS’s Top Safety Picks. It also boasts a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA going all the way back to the 2018 model year.

- Toyota Sequoia
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- Ford Expedition
Safest Mid-Sized Sedan: Honda Accord
The Honda Accord has been a long-time favorite with the Major World customer family. These athletic and handsome — but always practical sedans never sit on our lot long enough to collect dust.
We have more than a few customers who have bought several Honda Accords from us. Honda has been taking safety seriously for a long time and it shows. They also get excellent gas mileage and manage to be both sensible and fun to drive.
There’s even a hybrid version of the Accord, if you want truly exceptional MPG and everything else the Accord offers. All it takes is a test drive to understand why people love the Accord so much — consider that your invitation!

Other mid-sized sedans with good crash safety ratings include:
- Subaru Outback (wagon)
- Toyota Camry
- Mazda 6
Safest Pick–Up Truck: Toyota Tundra
This category was tough. There are some great competitors here and the scores are so close that you really cannot go wrong no matter which full-size pick-up truck you choose.
The Ford F150, Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra twins, RAM 1500, and Nissan Titan are all safe vehicles, truth be told. But we have to give the credit where it’s due. The Toyota Tundra managed to edge out all the competition with its 2022 model year redesign.
Before 2022, they were all neck-in-neck, but this redesign put the Tundra at the top of the stack for safety. From its rugged frame to the Toyota Safety Sense suite of sensors and software, you’d be hard-pressed to find a safer pick-up truck than this.
